Five Generations of customized service

McDowall Company’s history has spanned 127 years and 5 generations.  We have grown and evolved through the years, and we are known for providing high quality innovative solutions, customized service, and support to the community in which we work and live.  Since 1895, we have been working throughout the Upper Midwest supporting our commercial customers with a commitment to partnership, honesty, communication, and safety.

  • Present

    McDowall Company headquarters in Waite Park, MN with an additional office in New Hope, MN to service the greater Minneapolis-St. Paul metro. As of 2022, McDowall Company has grown to over 140 employees. 

  • 2022

    In addition to our involvement in many educational and municipal construction projects, we were excited to begin work on the new Altru Hospital construction project in Grand Forks, ND. Slated to open in 2024, this is one of the largest single projects we have been involved with. When completed, this location will include seven floors and 226 beds. 

  • 2021

    The McDowall Company Roofing division wrapped up a much-needed multi-million-dollar addition for Pilgrim’s Pride in Cold Spring, MN.  

    Our Architectural Exteriors division completed an exciting project for Carris Health in Redwood Falls, MN.

    Mounds View High School and Edgewood buildings along with the Eden Prairie Middle School were a few of the many HVAC projects completed in 2021.  

  • 2020

    McDowall Company completed a 4-story multi-million-dollar construction project for Blattner Energy in the St. Joseph area. Our HVAC Service division hits an all-time high for maintenance base and projects in 2020, exceeding 7 million in sales.

  • 2019

    McDowall Company expands to support the Metro with an office in New Hope, MN.

    McDowall Company was able to complete the Forest Lake High School HVAC construction project as well as Hutchinson Schools.

    Our roofing division completed a large-scale addition project for Graco Inc. in Sioux Falls, SD.

  • 2018

    This was an exciting year for McDowall Company as we continued our expansion into the Twin Cities Metro with the opening of our office in New Hope. McDowall Company was also awarded over $17M in HVAC and Roofing contracts for the $53M Tech High School project. 2018 also saw our project completion of Sartell High School.  

  • 2010-2018

    This is a period of steady growth for McDowall Company,  continued concentration on building our HVAC maintenance base and expanding our commercial construction, roofing, and architectural exteriors divisions.

  • 2016

    Lawrence McDowall retires from McDowall Company to enjoy time with family, as John and Matt concentrate on the business.

  • 2012

    Peter McDowall moves to retirement, John and Lawrence continue to grow the company.

  • 2009

    John W. McDowall was selected for the Entrepreneurial Success Award by the St. Cloud Chamber of Commerce.  The award recognizes leadership that has built a large successful business from small beginnings.

  • 2007

    McDowall Company builds a new state of the art 42,000 square foot facility, bringing 3 locations under one roof. Matt McDowall also joins the business, making the 5th generation to help grow the business.

  • 2000

    George J. and Bob McDowall retire. Ownership of McDowall Company transitions to John, Peter, and Lawrence McDowall that begins a period of rapid growth. 

  • 1998

    John W. McDowall becomes acting president of McDowall Company.

  • 1997

    McDowall Company’s growth continues in all departments as the 3rd generation of George J., Bob, and Bill McDowall begin to pass the torch to John, Peter, and Lawrence McDowall.  The company now employs 85 as George J. begins his retirement.

  • 1980-1990

    John W. McDowall is named treasurer, secretary, and vice president of the company.  The company continues to grow through challenges of the time.  McDowall Company begins specializing in the educational construction field.

  • 1983

    Peter McDowall attends Dunwoody College of Technology to further his knowledge and experience in the HVAC industry.  Graduating in 1985, Peter holds several licenses to perform HVAC work throughout Central Minnesota.

    McDowall Company leads in the continued renovation of downtown St. Cloud. Featured in an Escape magazine article, outlining the technical aspects of Cornice and architectural sheet metal applications on the historical Mitchell Building.

  • 1981

    John W. McDowall begins taking leadership roles in the company, while Lawrence L. McDowall joins the company in the roofing division.

  • 1973

    Throughout the 1970’s McDowall Company continued to grow under the leadership of George J. McDowall and his brothers Bob & Bill. The company spent time working on large scale energy projects in North Dakota and Iowa. John W. McDowall graduates from Technical High School and joins the company fulltime in roofing.

  • 1960's

    In the early 60’s, George J. McDowall introduces the company to fabrication and installation of HVAC systems. The growing company relocates to a 14,000 square foot facility on the west side of St. Cloud, focusing on HVAC as well as roofing.

  • Grace McDowall

    During the 60’s while running the company with her son George, Grace McDowall became the 1st woman to be elected to the St. Cloud City Council.  Grace was ahead of her time, looking to help the community’s industrial development.  Grace served 2 terms on the city council and acted as its president for four years.  Grace served with wit and wisdom and was named as one of the Outstanding Women in Minnesota by Business and Professional Women’s Association.

  • 1952

    William N. McDowall passes away unexpectedly at the age of 54. George and his mother Grace McDowall are left to run the company. 

  • 1948

    The McDowall Company experienced a brief interruption during the Great Depression, but was revived in the late 1940’s.  William N McDowall purchases Metal Roofing & Cornice Company in St. Cloud with Grace and their son George.

  • 1895

    George Atkinson McDowall first opened the doors at McDowall Roofing Company in 1895 in Joliet, Illinois. Roofing remained McDowall Roofing Company’s area of focus until the 1940’s when the company’s craftsmanship and capabilities enabled them to enter the specialty sheet metal industry.

Sales Leader Activity Award

McDowall Company achieved the Linc “Sales Leader Activity Award” in 2020.  As a member of the Linc network, this award speaks to customer satisfaction, consistency, and sales activity.  Being honored with this award several times, it speaks to the McDowall Company’s commitment to our customers and getting it right!

Carlisle SynTec Perfect 10

McDowall Company recently reached a roofing industry milestone, receiving its 500th Perfect 10 installation rating from Carlisle SynTec, a leading manufacturer of commercial roof systems. McDowall Company is one of only 49 authorized applicators in North America to have attained this high level of achievement in Carlisle’s quality recognition program. McDowall Company has installed over eight million square feet of warranted Carlisle roofing systems since becoming a Carlisle-authorized applicator in 1977. They are a member of Carlisle’s Hall of Fame, and a two-time Carlisle ESP (Excellence in Single-Ply) award winner.

Chamber of Commerce Award

In 2009, John McDowall received the Entrepreneurial Success Award from the St. Cloud Area Chamber of Commerce.

GAF Master Contractor

McDowall Company has earned the Master Select Contractor status with GAF for installation of built-up asphalt roofs.

This is an example set forth by past leaders of McDowall Company like Grace A. McDowall and her son George J. McDowall who served on many St. Cloud City civic organizations.

Current President & CEO John W. McDowall carries on this tradition by dedicating his time to such organizations as the St. Cloud Technical & Community College, the CentraCare Foundation, United Way, and Central Minnesota Boys and Girls Clubs.
